- Considering the fact that 5 or 6 percent is not going to change much, does NOT justify the cost from 3.0 to 3.2. You would little for a lot of money which you don't need. I had a 3,1 3.0 Mac Pro 8-core and loved it. The only reason why I got rid of it was because I needed SATA capability with windows using the ODD ports, hidden behind the fans.

Hey guys. after cleaning out an old mac pro and doing some upgrades, it comes time for the CPUs and heatsinks. Originally the 3.2 model came with silver thermal paste and a strange seal of 'Krytox Grease' around the thermal paste surrounding the edges of the CPU face. The stuff is made by DuPont and is extremely toxic. not even supposed to let it get in contact with any skin. not even your hands.
Im trading out the thermal paste for new IC diamond thermal compound instead of silver due to its better performance on other mac pros I have worked on. Never done a 3.2 before though. Wondering how crucial this Krytox grease is. the 2.8 and 3.0 don't use it at all. it is extremely toxic and hard to come by if at all. maybe you can get a tiny tube direct from apple but not sure if they would even sell that to the standard consumer. Apparently part of the reason for the grease is the added heat of the processor can cause the thermal paste to spread slightly more than the 2.8 and 3.0 and it is conductive. the grease would stop it from getting onto the cpu in places its not supposed to be. The thermal paste i use however is NOT conductive electrically. Dont have to worry about spillover due to CPU heating, and im experienced with how much to apply as to not blow paste out the edges.
So has anyone every reinstalled 3.2s without the grease? any opinions?
